Why take this course?
Testing workplace atmospheres is a critical safety step in high-risk environments such as confined spaces and hot work areas. Without proper testing, workers face the dangers of oxygen depletion, toxic gases, and flammable vapours, all of which can lead to serious incidents. This OPITO-approved course provides the knowledge and hands-on experience needed to perform accurate gas testing, ensure compliance with industry standards, and maintain a safe working environment to protect both people and operations.

What You Will Learn
Module 1 – Authorised Gas Tester
- Confined space criteria and atmospheric hazards
- Risk assessment and safe systems of work
- Gas detection equipment, calibration and sampling techniques
- PPE/RPE requirements and statutory responsibilities
- Interpreting and recording gas test results
Module 2 – Gas Testing for Hot Work
- Principles and hazards of hot work operations
- Flammable gas properties and safe oxygen levels
- Detector setup, testing procedures and monitoring requirements
Module 3 – Confined Space Gas Testing
- Behaviour and limits of flammable and toxic gases (WEL & LEL)
- Sequential gas testing and atmosphere sampling
- Continuous monitoring in confined spaces
Module 4 – Gas Monitoring for Hot Work Sites
- Roles of Gas Monitor, Fire Watch and Standby Personnel
- Monitoring atmospheric conditions during hot work
- Equipment checks, communication and documentation
Why this course is important
Scenarios for Use
-
Gas testing for Oxygen, flammable and toxic gases up to and including working in confined spaces
-
Gas testing prior to and during hot work
-
Monitoring confined space atmospheres for safe entry
-
Performing Safety Watch duties on hazardous work sites

Continuous atmospheric monitoring during ongoing operations
The Risk We Address
The Authorised Gas Tester plays a vital role in preventing accidents caused by hazardous atmospheres. Oxygen depletion, flammable vapours and toxic gases can create life-threatening conditions if not identified and controlled. This course provides delegates with the competence to detect these risks and take immediate, appropriate action to safeguard workers and operations.
Skills and Knowledge Gained
By completing this course, delegates will gain the knowledge and practical skills to safely test and monitor workplace atmospheres in line with OPITO standards. They will understand how to identify hazards, operate gas detection equipment, interpret results and maintain safe working conditions in confined spaces and during hot work. This training ensures participants are fully prepared to carry out their duties confidently, compliantly, and effectively.

assessment type
Written and Practical Assessment

Certification gained
Certificates are awarded after successful completion of the course and will be valid for a three year period, after which recertification must take place.
